Ingrid Windram was born in Adelaide, South Australia, where she studied art fulltime at the Stanley Street School of Art, and then at the Hartley College of Advance Education. Whilst living in South Australia she travelled extensively through the state on field trips up the Strezleki and Birdsville tracks, to areas like Innamincka, Mulka Station on the cooper Creek, as well as Lake Eyre and many places along the River Murray.
Early in her career she painted Natural Forests in the Adelaide Hills and spent several years enjoying and painting the simplistic beauty of the Coorong. After ten years as a professional artist earning respect and recognition for her work, she moved to the Kimberley Region in 1992, looking for new inspiration for Art and Life.
The vibrant colours of the Kimberley landscape have inspired her work; however her paintings are not replicas of a particular spot, but are more the essence of this ancient environment in which she now lives.
To minimise the impact of the landscape she often simplifies the information to focus on light and colour, so as to generate a mood, and define its spirit. Her preferred medium is Acrylics on Rag Paper or Canvas, but she is also uses gouaches and charcoal.
Ingrid has travelled extensively throughout the Kimberley Region on field trips, setting up camp in area such as the Bungle Bungles, El Questro Station to access the many Gorges, and most places along the Gibb River road.
In September 2004 she was an invited Artist aboard the cruise ship True North, exploring the wilderness of the Kimberley Coast. It was a truly inspirational trip, that with the use of dingys and the helicopter she was able to explore an untouched landscape. The trip was in the Dry Season offering its own uniqueness.
March 2005 saw Ingrid aboard the True North's new vessel as Artist in Residence. This trip was in the Wet Season soon after cyclone Ingrid had passed through. Viewing the dramatic alterations to the landscape was amazing, with stark escarpments denuded of vegetation being seen where the cyclone had gone through, and waterfalls cascading everywhere, being left in its wake.
The inspiration from these two trips will be used in her 2007 exhibition to be held in Perth. To deepen her Artistic senses, Ingrid travelled to Italy in September 2005 studying the Masters, and in April and May 2006 she was again in Europe furthering the Art in Culture experience.
Ingrid Windram has emerged as a very successful Australian artist with her paintings being represented in many Corporate and Private Collections throughout Australia and overseas.
